In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

Unnayan TV is the first online video channel in Bangladesh which regularly publishes video contents on development, human rights, and educational as well as cultural issues of Bangladesh. The non-profit project is an alternative initiative against the commercial media giants. The Bangla word "Unnayan" stands for "Development" i.e. "Development of human life and civilization".

Apart from producing multimedia local content, Machizo does advocacy through new media on contemporary development issues, popular culture, digital justice, grassroots voice, participatory video, democratic rights and peoples participation. Machizo welcomes all kinds of positive change and change makers, who are committed to building a better world and society by using the media and digital opportunities. The word, ‘Machizo’ has been coined from a Japanese phrase, “Machi Ukegazou” which means “working for Change”. Machizo inherits that spirit of change with universal values and unity.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

Winner of the Manthan Award South Asia 2008 , E-Culture & Entertainment CATEGORY
The project makes tremendous use of multimedia and web technology to produce and publish local content online. Simple online web technology is used for video distribution. News-content is sent and published through popular mailing list, blogs and online applications.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

The need to recognize grassroots and farfetched communities, their living conditions, culture and practices is very relevant for an inclusive growth and development agenda. With its efforts directed towards focusing the unreported Bangladesh, Unnayan TV is trying to create space for marginalized community, particularly the poor. There is an active involvement of young media professionals and journalists in this technology project making regular efforts to reach out to the unreached. Despite challenges equally unrelenting like lack of internet facilities, Unnayan TV is reaching out to the semi-urban and rural user communities and making efforts to provide various cultural and entertainment programmes to the farfetched and deprived viewer communities.
Machizo believes information technology (ICT) has unprecedented power to share, connect and unite the people which are the precondition for freedom, peace, development and happiness in all arenas of life with positive change and public motivation. To share information properly local content is necessary. With the social changing motivations Machizo set up the mission to produce quality multimedia local content that helps Bangladesh to be a prosperous country by improving democratic rights, quality of life and livelihoods.

    DEF - Digital Knowledge Center

Digital Knowledge Center (DKC) is an initiative of Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) & National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) to function as an ‘Online repository’ of best digital contents for development in India and South Asia.

With the incoming of new technology in ICT and digital content technology along with various technology delivery platforms, a lot many interventions in digital content have been taking place in South Asia. Interventions are visible in all major areas – Education, Learning, Health, Governance, Entertainment, Localization, Commerce, Culture, Environment, Tourism, Infrastructure and so on. Creation of digital content, its deployment, service delivery and usage has increased each day.

While these developments are taking place, it is equally critical to have these interventions and practices shared, exchanged, and deployable from one place to another. For this to happen, one needs to have a resource bank available for learning, sharing and replication. Digital Knowledge Centre works as such a platform in audio-visual documentation format, which provides solutions to many of our social, economic, cultural and governance challenges.
