About the project Edit

Environmental benefits
• For every Carshare vehicle on the road five personal vehicles are removed
• Less congestion, noise and stress on infrastructure and greenspace
• Well maintained cars mean less pollution in our air and water
• Recognized by the Sustainable Transport Council of Canada to be one of three important greenhouse gas reduction initiatives in Canada

Community benefits
• Promotes active transportation, walking, biking, for a healthy lifestyle
• Develops community through democracy, sharing and caring
• Addresses social inequality for those unable to afford a private vehicle
• Provides programs for disabled, low-income and senior drivers

Member benefits
• No time spent on vehicle maintenance or unexpected costs
• Only pay for when you use a car with low usage fees
• Use of cars, vans and trucks as well as trailers, bike and roof racks
• No insurance or gas costs
• Access to over 200 vehicles in Vancouver and Victoria

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

What’s the impact? Lets’ do the math:

Average km driven by a private vehicle per year 16,000 km
Reduction in km driven per Carshare vehicle 80,000 km
Reduction in km for the 20 Carshare vehicles currently in use 1,600,000 km
Amount of GHGs produced per km driven 0.0987 kg
Total reduction of GHGs for Kootenay Carshare’s fleet each year 157.9 Tons/Year

Now that’s something to be proud of!

What is the social value of this project? Edit

Save Money
• Car ownership is a huge expense. If you need a car four days a week or less, carsharing will probably save you money.
• Carsharing provides members with access to vehicles when they need one and they only pay for what they use!
• Without insurance, maintenance, repairs and gas costs to worry about, members end up with more money in the bank at the end of the month.
• That’s money to put towards more important things, like student loans, new skis, credit card payments, that next great vacation or even a new home.

Be Green
• People sharing cars means fewer cars on the road. Fewer cars on the road means fewer greenhouse gas emissions, less stress on our green spaces, and less traffic in our towns.
• It is estimated that for every Kootenay Carshare Co-op car on the road, at least 5 private vehicles are removed. That means that since we started in 2001, about 95 vehicles have been taken off the road.
Community
• Being part of a non-profit cooperative means that the money you pay for your usage fee goes towards strengthening the organization and your community.
• New to town? Become a member and meet our members at one of our annual events. Carsharing is a great way to network with like-minded people.
• We make an effort to participate and contribute to community and member driven initiatives. Whether its donating vehicle time and drivers for a local youth bottle drive or arranging carpooling to non-profit learning events, we are on board!

Freedom
• Because members don’t have a car parked in their driveway, they are more likely to walk or bike and have multi-use trips.
• With the Kootenay Carshare Cooperative you get all the benefits of owing a car without any of the hassle. We boost batteries, change flat tires and do regular maintenance and cleaning on our vehicles so you don’t have to!
• Moving? Recycling? Friends in town? Going hiking? With access to cars, trucks with 4×4 and vans you can access where you want when you want.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

excellent!

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

People sharing cars means fewer cars on the road. Fewer cars on the road means fewer greenhouse gas emissions, less stress on our green spaces and infrastructure, and less traffic in our towns.

Researchers estimate that for every Kootenay Carshare Co-op car on the road, at least 5 private vehicles are removed. Since 2001, we have taken approximately 95 vehicles off the road.

Members report using vehicle transportation less, combining trips and walking and biking more often. Transportation is a significant contributor to the production of greenhouse gasses, and being a part of a carshare is a positive solution that we can all take part in!

Carsharing is considered by the Sustainable Transport Council of Canada to be one of three important Green House Gas Reduction Initiatives in Canada. Carsharing can help us to meet our Kyoto goals.
